The Rhône runs towards the sun of the Midi area. Along the banks of the river are some of the oldest vineyards in France.
Nowadays, the Rhone valley is the number two wine-growing region in France, after the Bordeaux region, in terms of wines of designated origin (AOC). The mostly warm red wines possess, along with Tavel, the oldest designation for rosés.
The most prestigious of these wines is the famous red «Chateauneuf du Pape». This wine can be laid down for decades.
