Bâtard-Montrachet is a grand cru vineyard at the base of the Montrachet hill, across the communes of Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet. Vincent Girardin is a highly regarded Burgundy domaine based in Meursault. It makes a wide range of wines from both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay although the latter predominates.

Overt vanilla aromas tends to come with barrel fermentation more than via the more gentle processes involved in barrel maturation, and from new wood rather than used oak.
